John Taiwo: “One Question…Changed My Direction”
Greetings! I am back again to introduce John Taiwo. He is an author, blogger, marketer, and businessman. My favorite quote from John Taiwo’s interview was “I wish I had surrounded myself with people who have achieved, what I set out to achieve earlier on in my journey.” John Taiwo’s quote spoke to me because I started this blog after I went to the African Harvard Business Conference. I was surrounded by people who accomplished amazing things. It was inspiring. Now back to John Taiwo’s interview.
My name is John Taiwo. I was born and raised in the capital city of Abeokuta in Ogun State. I graduated with an HND in Civil Engineering from The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro.
Describe your business.
I am the CEO of Young Infopreneurs Group of Companies. The company focuses on the problems of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and individuals that are interested in making money online.
If you ask any entrepreneur what their biggest issue is, they will tell you that getting new customers is very difficult. Most of their money is spent on advertising and driving traffic to their business.
We sell products that will increase sales and Internet traffic. One of our most popular product is “Millions of Active Nigerian Email Addresses” which helps SMEs drive traffic to their sites and easily get new customers. We provide this excellent service at a very cheap price. For those interested in making money online we write eBooks that teach them how to make money online.
I run this business from the comfort of my home.
How did the idea for your business come about? When did you start?
I started this business in 2014 while I was in school. I learned I could build a business blog right on my phone.
But what made you think about this idea. Were you always attracted to building blogs? Did someone tell you about this business? Did you read an article about this business?
I wanted to have an online business but I didn’t know how to go about it. So I researched and read many articles.
The one question that changed my direction, was can I create a blog on my phone? That was how the whole thing started. I knew it should be possible. No one told me, I thought it was possible and used my creativity to construct it.
Since then I have built my businesses (blogs), run them, and started earning money online.
What were the tools you needed to start your business? Cellphone, data, constant electricity, wifi, do you have a computer or do you go to internet cafes, etc?
I need a BlackBerry phone, data, constant electricity and a computer system.
Did you feel pushed into starting your business/es? Were you facing financial insecurity?
When I was in school, I wanted to be independent. I did not want to depend on my parents for everything. I also wanted to be an entrepreneur and have my own business. I thought it was a great opportunity for me to start and that was the beginning of my journey.
How many hours a day do you work/describe a typical day in your life.
I can’t exactly say how many hours a day I work. I love what I do and never tire of doing
it. I am having fun so it doesn’t burn my energy much. I can work from morning till night.
I wake up in the morning, pray to God and read the scripture, plan out my day, bath and start working. I don’t have a specific closing time. I can decide to work part-time or full-time.
What have been some of your failures and what have you learned from them?
When I first started, a customer called and told me he wanted to buy a database. I told him the price and he said he couldn’t afford that amount and wanted to pay a lesser price. I told him I was uninterested but he kept calling me. I stopped picking up his calls and he went ahead and bought from my competitor that sells the same product.
Later we talked and he told me that no matter what I should have picked up his calls and that I didn’t treat him well. So, I learned that my potential and current customers needs, care and satisfaction. Now he is a good friend and client.
What has been your most satisfying moment in your business?
I started this business alone and when the business picked up speed I decided to work with 5 others to form a team. There are moments when the business is progressing fast and we are getting good results.
How do you market your business?
On social media sites and online forums.
What’s an example of what you do?
I have written several books. Here are couple of them.
1. How to Blog on your Phone
2. How To make N50,000 -N250,000 Monthly on Nairaland
I also sell emails and GSM databases for business promotion and so on.
Looking back, what is one thing you wished you understood before you
started your business?
I wish I had surrounded myself with people who have achieved, what I set out to achieve earlier on in my journey.
What are 3 pieces of advice you would give people who want to become entrepreneurs in Nigeria?
Never do what you don’t love. I think the key to success is “do what you love or love what you do and you will succeed”. Never do what you don’t like. In short follow your passion.
Entrepreneurs don’t create problems, they solve problems. Look for what people need and help them get it and you will get paid.
Be persistent and keep learning in order to become an expert in your niche.
I found you on Nairaland, how does that platform help you market your business?
Nairaland is the number 1 forum in Nigeria. It is one of the most visited sites in the country. It has helped me connect with people that need my products and services. That site has really enhanced my business growth and success.
